Our Story: Jared's Story

This summer Jered attended the bike camp, Lose the Training Wheels, that was sponsored by the Albany Chapter of the Autism Society. It was a fantastic experience! Jerry and I tried, without success, many times to teach Jered to ride a bike without training wheels. It always ended with us frustrated and Jered vowing to never ride his bike again. At the camp, Jered rode the first two days on a bike with an adapted rear wheel. The third day he was riding tandem. The last two days he was riding a two-wheeler with a handle for support. After his first day of practice at home, he was able to start and stop without assistance. We were able to take the handle off!

Jered really enjoys riding. What a confidence booster! This summer we’ve made many trips around the block and in one day we did 10 miles on the Schenectady bike trail. We were able to stop at lock 8 on the Mohawk River. The lock operator gave us a tour and we were able to see a boat go through the lock. He also gave us information on the Erie Canal. We also saw a lot of nature, deer, chipmunks, a blue heron, fish and turtles. It was nice to make a day of biking and history.
